When wires lie next to each other in a cable they tend to get crosstalk which interferes with their signals.
The two factors affecting crosstalk protection are:
- The number of wires in the cable
- The number of twists in these wires
Twisted pair cabling
The wires are twisted so the positive and negative signals are cancelled out to prevent cross talk.
There are three main types of twisted cables
Cat 3 – Carries 10Mbps
Cat 5 – Carries 100Mbps
Cat 5e – Carries 100Mbps, has more twists than the Cat 5
Shielded twisted pair
Each pair is foil covered and each set of four pairs is also foil covered to provide even greater protection from crosstalk.
