Unicode

Unicode is the breaking up of 8 bits into 2 sets of 4 so computers can recognise what symbol is being represented.

The first four bytes represent whether the symbol is a letter, number, punctuation etc.

The second four bytes represent which letter or number etc. in the set is to be used.
